The mission of the Dayton Diggers is to research, recover, and document history. We help people connect with history that has been buried and lost with time. The Dayton Diggers is a 501C-3 non-profit organization formed in January 2009 to bring together those in and around the Dayton, Ohio area who dedicate themselves to historical research and recovery.
The Dayton Diggers has a wide variety of members with often wide areas of interest and expertise. We have members with direct archeological experience, near surface geophysical experience (such as ground penetrating radar, electromagnetics, and magnetics), and excavation experience. Our members encompass all levels of interest from amateur to expert.
We research a multitude of documents including records, maps, books and vintage newspapers to ascertain where historic artifacts may be found. Our tools typically include various metal detectors, probes, and hand shovels. We practice responsible recovery and documentation of relics including coins, tokens, marbles, militaria, bottles and cans.
Our goal is to leave places we search in better condition than we arrived. We do this by removing and discarding trash and doing our best to correct any on-site safety hazards.
Dayton Diggers always seek permission before searching and recovering artifacts. We enjoy working with property owners and helping them understand the history of their property by explaining the artifacts we have recovered.
Dayton Diggers often participate in their local historical societies. We encourage all of our members to be active in local historical societies and inform them of any important finds or discoveries. We have participated in group projects with several Miami Valley historical societies to recover and document artifacts that can then be displayed for the general public’s benefit.
Dayton Diggers members keep in contact with local government and law enforcement offering assistance with any requests for metal detecting services. Metal detector users can aid law enforcement by searching for evidence; items such as shell casings, bullets, weapons and stolen property. We have directly assisted Police departments and court attorneys.
Dayton Diggers assist the general public with common lost items. Metal detectors are often used to find lost keys, rings, jewelry, cell phones, and even property stakes. In most cases, one of our members will be happy to help you look for these lost items as well.
The Dayton Diggers gladly accepts tax deductible donations.
